Yes. Legacy binary Word files are read by the document engine. The newer DOCX and ODT formats are converted with higher fidelity because they are structured archives rather than a single binary blob.

Are the text utilities safe to use on any text file?

Yes. Formatting, cleaning, normalising, line-ending, encoding, case, find and replace, and counting all operate in place and keep the original file format, so a Markdown file stays Markdown.
